"Enabling Young People"

What’s Up is a free, national telephone counselling service for New Zealanders aged 5 to 18 years that has been available since 22nd September 2001.

The service operates seven days a week from noon to midnight. Paid, trained and closely supervised professional counsellors answer the telephones.

Advanced technology is used to collect non-identifying information on calls, which is analysed and used to advocate for children’s needs.

What’s Up aims to provide early help to children and teach them skills that will help prevent the development of major problems later in their lives.

What’s Up is provided by The Kid’s Help Foundation Trust in association with Barnardos New Zealand. The Trust is a New Zealand registered charity sponsored by Telecom, White Pages® and Child Health Services Trust.

Lions International is the largest service group in the world. Our approach is that by banding positive people together we can do much more for our community than an individual is able to achieve.

Cambridge Lions has around 50 members who are constantly working in our community, firstly to generate funds, then to distribute these funds to both needy individuals and groups and to help positive young people in activities which will help them become the leaders of tomorrow. In doing so, our members provide each other with a great deal of fellowship, support and enjoyment.

To those who think joining Lions might be interesting, phone one of our contacts and come along for a look at what we do.

Trash 'n' Treasure Market: This is held on the 2nd Sunday each month in the shopping area from 8am to 1pm. Lions sell stall space to individuals and groups and also run our own food stall and sales activities. It has grown from very small beginnings to become a feature event in Cambridge.

Early Intervention Provider / Early Childhood Education Unit

The Principles of Conductive Education:
Conductive Education is a learning process:
Conductive Education approaches physical disabilities from an educational rather than a medical or paramedical perspective. People who have motor disorders have a problem of learning, which requires education as opposed to a medical condition, which requires treatment.

Conductive Education offers a holistic, integrated approach to special education:
Conductive Education provides a holistic approach to educating people with motor disorders. The nature of real-life is that at any one time a wide range of skills are being used and developed. We are never doing just one thing; every task involves many elements but for a motor-disabled person these are often very difficult to organise and co-ordinate. This is why Conductive Education pays attention to all areas of development, all aspects of the personality in an integrated manner. It seeks to teach people to address each area without forgetting the others, and learn to co-ordinate them effectively.

Active participation is the key for development:
In Conductive Education individuals are encouraged to engage in the world around them and actively participate as this is the only way, learning will take place. To achieve active participation, Conductive Education provides the motor disabled person with a wide range of "life-like" but at the same time, achievable activities.

Conductive Education seeks to change the person, not the environment:
Although some adaptation of equipment is used in Conductive Education, the aim is that eventually the motor disordered person will learn ways of accessing their environment rather than the environment needing to be adapted to cater for their needs.

Functional activities provide the tools for learning and teaching:
The activities used and situations created in CE will be the same or very similar to those of able-bodied individuals. It is the conductors duty to select these activities carefully, taking the participants age, developmental level, abilities, needs and personal characteristics into account to ensure that success is achievable. Success and enjoyment in these activities will give participants the desire and motivation to participate even more. Eventually the motor disabled person will be able to determine their own goals and possess the motivation to reach them. This is the stage where learning and development will be maximised and participants will reach their full potential.
Country Creche Childcare Centre

  Where: Marychurch Road, Matangi
  Phone: 07 829 5635

Country Creche is a privately owned centre situated in a rural setting, catering for children from 0-5 years of age.

The centre is licensed for 40 children overall with two separate buildings. The under 2’s building provides spaces for 12 children, and the over 2’s building for 28 children.

The adult to child ratio’s are low, to maintain quality interactions and learning experiences within the environment.

The Centre has qualified and registered teachers, who cater for individual children’s needs by providing a high standard of education and care.

The programme is child initiated, responding to children’s interests and strengths. The programme is a mixture of structure and free play activities.

Our teachers support and guide children, enabling them to become confident and competent learners.

The Centre management and staff believe in the importance of communication and consultation between the centre and families. Each child’s well-being is the centre’s main focus, and any parent/guardian and whanau involvement is welcome at any time.

Healthline is a free 24-hour telephone health advice service (0800 611 116) funded by the Ministry of Health. It is a service available for all New Zealanders, from the newborn to the elderly, from either a landline or cellphone.

Healthline registered nurses assess a person's condition and health needs and recommend the best course of action and a time-frame in which to take action. They can also provide general health information and location of services.

The Healthline service now includes Well Child Advice. Specially-trained nurses provide Well Child advice, including parenting advice, child health promotion and education.
The Healthline call centre is staffed by registered nurses who determine the most appropriate level of care for the caller. The nurses do not diagnose or treat health problems over the phone.

New Early Learning centre due to open in November 2008.

Welcome to Little Einsteins, an Early Childhood Education Centre where children from birth to school age will be cared for in a warm, stimulating and learning environment, with a primary focus on positive social development and education.

We will provide quality, qualified early childhood teachers and resources to enhance the children's learning and ensure their development and wellbeing. Staff will all be trained in First Aid and CPR alongside their Early Childhood Teaching qualifications. We will have a team of enthusiastic, caring, and experienced educators.

There will be three areas of operation, so that children are appropriately divided into similar learning and social groups. The infant area will be from birth to 2 years, the intermediate area will be from 2 years to 3.5 years, and the preschool area will be from 3.5 years to 5 years. The preschool area will focus on becoming ready for school, with an emphasis on basic reading/writing skills, ABC's and comprehension, providing links to learning in school settings.

Our booking days will now be full days only, with a discounted rate for a full week. For those already booked in for half days, these will be $20.00, hours between 7am and 12.15pm (not including lunch), or between 12.15pm and 5.30pm (including lunch). As the majority of people are wanting full days and full weeks, it is becoming increasingly difficult to fit these children in, so the only half days booked now will be 'leftovers' of what has already been half-booked. Full day bookings will be $40.00, and a full week will be $180.00.

All confirmed enrolments will be required to pay a $25 non-refundable application fee. We will be confirming enrolments closer to opening, and bringing families in to see the centre.

In the under-two's area, there will be a teacher to child ratio of 1:4. The intermediates (2 years to 3.5 years) ratio will be 1:8, and the preschool unit will have a ratio of 1:10.

The centre will be open plan, with large indoor and outdoor areas, as we believe that children need space to grow and learn! The centre will be on 5540sqm (1 ¼ acres) of land, incorporating a 600sqm purpose built haven complete with fun and educational indoor toys and activities. The building will be fully air conditioned.

It will be rurally focused, working around not only animals and their feeding and care, but gardening and horticulture, growing plants and flowers, an environmental hub.

Meals will be fully catered for, including breakfast if required, and children encouraged to eat the vegetables and fruit that they grow as part of a healthy eating plan. We know that many parents face the dilemma of children not wanting to eat a balanced diet, and believe that if a child is responsible for the nurturing, growing and preparation of that vegetable, it might become a lot more palatable!

Outdoors, children can look forward to driving/pushing their cars/bikes/trikes around the purpose built concrete track bordering the 800sqm play area. They can dig and build and create in the shaded sandpits, or bliss out playing with taps, fountains and buckets in the constantly draining wet area, designed with their safety in mind. There will be ample play and climbing equipment to keep little minds and bodies occupied.

We have by far exceeded the Ministry of Education's minimum requirements for space both inside and out, even when filled to capacity of 100 children. As parents of six children, we appreciate the value of space for everybody's peace of mind!

Children would be encouraged to participate in caring for their environment, develop loving, nurturing and tactile relationships with the various animals; miniature ponies, rabbits, birds, guinea pigs, alpacas, calves and lambs.

Children's relationships at home will be nurtured, we encourage parents and families to participate in their child's development and learning, and welcome you into the centre with our open door policy. We will provide you with your child's portfolio to reflect on at regular intervals, a place where we will preserve any special artwork, write development plans and assess progress of your child. We will include photographs of your child, and this is not only a fantastic way to keep in touch with your child's busy days, but a lovely keepsake for them when they are older!

With encouragement, children will explore and absorb a phenomenal amount during their first five years. We are privileged to be offered a place in this vital stage of their development, and will optimise their opportunities for learning.

Queries from prospective families are welcomed.

Rachael Kirk, Louise Cockburn and Rebekka Plane are a group of Mum’s who are business owners, they started a networking/Support group 12 months ago in Tauranga and are now expanding to other regions around NZ, this month Cambridge and next month Auckland.

We all know word of mouth is the best form of marketing and also know a lot of small businesses fail due to mis management.

Mums in Business is a new networking group designed specifically for women business owners who work in their business and are raising children to support them in the challenges of managing a business and being a Mum.

We offer a 2 hour monthly group sessions where members get the opportunity to meet other like minded women, share your stories, learn from others, listen to guest speakers, discuss hot business topics, brain storm on their businesses and others, learn parenting skills, meet potential clients and get referrals. All in a session guided by our agenda but not restricted to it.

We offer a child friendly environment and have toys, books and DVDs available; our sessions are a no smacking zone.

We hope to make other mums aware of our group and we have an information pack available, web banner to promote and one free membership (12m) in each region to give away in a competition for one LUCKY Mum who comes to our first meeting in Cambridge and Auckland.

  Affordable In-Home Childcare

The PORSE Programme has been developed to ensure babies and young children can be nurtured one-on-one with a special person responding consistently to their comforts and needs.

In-Home Childcare provides all the right ingredients for positive early brain development. Parents personally choose their own educator.

…in your Family Home
Where your chosen educator manages the daily routines of your children and home – no daily rush, offering nurturing care, education and home management.

You may also wish to consider a ‘family share’ situation, where the services of an educator (and cost) are shared with another family who have children under five.

…or an Educator’s Home
Where your chosen educator welcomes your children into their home – offering a play and learning programme in a small group setting that supports early brain development and growth.

Your chosen educator could actually be a friend or family member already caring for your child in your home or theirs.

The PORSE Programme offers educators free workplace training and professional development.

With 20 Free ECE Hours for 3 & 4 year olds and WINZ Subsidies available, call us today to discuss the best educator for your child on 0800 276 773 or visit our website at www.porse.co.nz
